FAQs

1. What is recruitment?

Recruitment is a period of time where SYZters and potential new members participate in fun, diverse, and engaging activities to get to know one another. During this period, you will get the opportunity to learn more about our sorority and what we stand for while mingling with the SYZters . All events are free and non-binding, meaning that there is absolutely no pressure to commit to or join SYZ when you attend our events.

2. What makes Sigma Psi Zeta different from other sororities?

First and foremost, Sigma Psi Zeta is a progressive, multicultural Greek organization, a trait that sets us aside from Pan-Hellenic Greek sororities. Our organization is smaller than the latter, allowing our SYZters to have more opportunities to create closer bonds with one another. The continuous connection between alumni and active SYZters is essential because alumni can provide invaluable professional advice and connections for active SYZters post-graduation. Lastly, Sigma Psi Zeta allows individual voices to be heard in order to affect the surrounding community.

3. I  don't identify with multiple cultures, can I still join?

Definitely! Although we are a multicultural sorority, our goal is to celebrate womxn of all races, ethnicities, and nationalities. In fact, we are the most diverse national multicultural sorority in terms of race and ethnicity.

4. Does Sigma Psi Zeta have a brother fraternity?

No, Sigma Psi Zeta does not have any brother fraternities. As a sorority that empowers womxn and comprises of strong, independent individuals, we have made the deliberate choice to remain unaffiliated with another Greek organization.

5. Does Sigma Psi Zeta haze?

No, Sigma Psi Zeta has a strict non-hazing policy. Not only would hazing be in violation of many university policies, but our organization's national philanthropy is to combat violence against womxn and hazing would directly contradict this effort.

6. What can I expect from a "typical" Sigma sister?

There is no “typical” Sigma SYZter. SYZterhood is not a mold for womxn to fit into nor does it make each SYZter who she is. Each SYZter contributes her talent, idealism, devotion, and energy to Sigma Psi Zeta, giving our SYZterhood the character it has today. With the unique bonds and special memories formed as SYZters, we hope that each SYZter will change our sisterhood, helping it to grow and progress over time.

7. How much time should I expect to commit if I want to join?

You should expect the process to be equivalent to taking a 3-credit course. While you can choose how much time you devote to the process, the more effort you put in, the more valuable your experience will be. As a sorority, we strive for academic excellence and will always put your academic performance first. SYZters are there to support you in your academic, personal, and professional endeavors.

8. What networking opportunities will I have as a sister?

Sigma Psi Zeta has a membership of over 3,000 SYZters worldwide. SYZters have backgrounds and jobs in many fields and professions, including healthcare, education, business, and more. There are many opportunities to network and meet other SYZters, through regional events like MARR or national events like National Convention.

9. I’m a senior. Is it too late to join?

Once a Sigma, always a Sigma. Your membership with Sigmas is not an experience you can only enjoy while being an undergrad. Once you join the SYZterhood, you wear your letters for life. Alumnae SYZters join a large network of others and can continue attending events or even holding positions on the National Board.

10. Do I have to join if I attend recruitment events?

Absolutely not! All of our recruitment events are free, and more importantly, non-binding. They are a great way to see if you want to join the sorority, or a way to meet new friends.

11. Why Sigma?

As an organization, we work extremely hard to create a space for womxn to feel safe and empowered. We encourage leadership in more organizations than our own, because we want our members to branch out and be pillars of empowerment for others. We have a strong focus on academics, because we believe in education as a powerful tool to elevate women in the workplace and beyond. Lastly, we place a huge emphasis on community service and our philanthropy, to combat violence against womxn, and continuously strive to make our campuses better places for womxn.
